Use a wide ribbon, piece of felt, a strip of the flat foam or even a lace piece to cover the rubber band or string. Wrap it around the hat, covering the string, but placing the ribbon or other piece so that one edge is on each side of the rubber band or string. That way, the string or rubber band can be cut away and removed. Or, just glue the ribbon or lace over the rubber band and leave the band or string in place. Gluing the ribbon, felt or strip of foam around the hat will ensure that the hat will hold its shape.
